Funding Opportunities

OIFSC Apprentice2

Financial support for Apprentices

While you complete your apprenticeship training at OIFSC, you may be eligible for funding and supports through the federal and provincial governments.

Apprenticeship Grants

Canada Apprentice Loan

Starting in January 2015, you can apply for up to $4,000 in interest-free loans per period of technical training. The money will be available to you to help pay for tuition, tools, equipment and living expenses, to cover forgone wages or to help support your family. Learn more.

Apprenticeship Completion Bonus in Non-Red Seal Trades

This completion bonus is a taxable cash grant of $2,000. The grant is available to registered apprentices after they successfully complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their Certificate of Apprenticeship and, where available, their C of Q in any Ontario non-Red Seal trade, on or after April 1, 2009.

RESP Proceeds

Apprentices when in school (and potentially when working on the job) may be eligible to receive funds from RESP programs they are a part of. Apprentices should check with their RESP administrator to inquire about accessing funds from their account.

Support Allowance

This is provided by the Province of Ontario and is a targeted benefit for apprentices attending in-school apprenticeship training. The benefit is variable depending on the specifics of each apprentice. Allowances may include travel, living away from home, daycare, etc.

Loans for Tools Program

Newly registered apprentices can apply to the provincial government for a $400 interest free loan to purchase trade tools. The loan is payable when the apprentice a) becomes a journeyperson or b) leaves the apprenticeship program. Learn more.

Apprentice Education Fund (AEF)

As per the collective agreements apprentices have $1.00/hr. worked deducted from their after tax pay and held for them in trust. Apprentices collect these funds when attending apprenticeship schooling. The program ends when the apprentice graduates from advanced level school.
